Adam Theodore Sheldon, 28, Hays, was arrested at 10:21 p.m. May 23 in the 500 block of East 14th on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs and transporting an open container of alcohol. Darin Rodd Sheffer, 44, Hays, was arrested at 9:09 a.m. May 24 in the 1200 block of East 27th on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Salvador Alvarez, 40, Hays, was arrested at 10:22 p.m. May 24 in the 2600 block of General Lawton on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Clark Gorman Reeves, 24, Hays, was arrested at 9:19 p.m. May 23 in the 1300 block of Schwaller on suspicion of domestic battery. Dustin Jay Howell, 27, Phillipsburg, was arrested at 2:15 p.m. May 25 in the 1200 block of Fort on suspicion of drug possession and possession of drug paraphernalia. Devin Kyle Ermoian, 24, Hays, was arrested at 4:24 a.m. May 25 in the 3300 block of Willow on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Jose Diaz, 21, Hays, was arrested at 1:41 p.m. May 24 in the 200 block of East 20th on suspicion of interference with a law enforcement official. Lucas Ryan Freeman, 18, Damascus, Ark., was arrested at 2:23 a.m. May 23 in the 400 block of Main on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. Jonathan Ray Hashenberger, 24, Hays, was arrested at 11:06 a.m. May 22 in the 300 block of Elm on suspicion of drug distribution and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Cody William Schultz, 26, Hays, was arrested at 7:40 p.m. May 25 in the 300 block of West 15th on suspicion of disorderly conduct.

Dana Renee Tsereteli, 34, Hays, was arrested at 5:36 p.m. May 22 in the 200 block of West 29th on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Lynn Wickizer

W. Lynn Wickizer, 75, Hays, died Saturday, May 31, 2014, at the Hays Medical Center.

He was born July 5, 1938 in McCook, Nebraska the son of Waldo E. and Helen M. (Christensen) Wickizer. He was the retired co-owner and CEO of the Wickizer Petroleum Company. He attended public schools in Wakeeney and was a 1956 graduate of Trego Community High School. He played basketball at Fort Hays Kansas State University, was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity, and graduated in 1961.

On November 4, 1973 he married Carol S. Chandler in Osborne, Kansas. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Hays, was a longtime member of The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks and was a Past State President of the Kansas Elks Association, was a member of the Half Century Club at FHSU, was an avid pheasant, turkey, and deer hunter who loved to help his sons get their deer. He also enjoyed camping and boating with family and friends and pulling his kids waterskiing.

Survivors include his wife, of the home, two sons, Ward Wickizer of Ellis, KS and Jess and Dawn Wickizer of Manhattan, two daughters Laura Dunaway and husband Tim of Olathe and Meagan Sherard and husband Ronnie of Alamogordo, NM, a sister Christine Vitztum and husband Gerald of Hays, eight grandchildren Cody Lockett, Shawn Dunaway, Wray Wickizer, Ben Wickizer, Shannon Dunaway, Taylor Sherard, Emma Sherard, and Levi Wickizer, and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Rhetis Ann Simons.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 am on Thursday, June 5, 2014, at the First United Methodist Church, Hays. Burial with graveside services by the BPOE will be in the Mt. Allen Cemetery. Friends may call from 5:00 pm until 7:00 Wednesday at the Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home and from 9:00 am until service time Thursday at the church.

Memorials are suggested to the Kansas Elks Training Center for the Handicapped or to the Elks Hoop Shoot Scholarship Program, in care of the funeral home.

Cremation was chosen, and services will take place at a later date.

Hays High alum promoted to colonel at West Point

Bret P. Van Poppel was promoted to the rank of colonel in the U.S. Army on May 30 at West Point, New York.

Van Poppel serves as director of the Mechanical Engineering Division and an Academy Professor (Associate Professor) within the Department of Civil and Mechanical Engineering at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.

He graduated from USMA in 1992, and he holds a Ph.D. from the University of Colorado at Boulder in Mechanical Engineering.

Van Poppel, his wife, Chris, son Will and daughter Charlee live at West Point. He is a 1988 graduate of Hays High School.

Rolando Casas Guajardo, 54, Hays, was arrested at 11:23 p.m. May 31 in the 300 block of East 15th on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, failure to report an accident, and leaving the scene of a property damage accident. Trenton Michael Griffin, 25, Hays, was arrested at 2:02 a.m. June 1 in the 600 block of Main on suspicion of interference with a law enforcement official. Billy Duane Williams, 51, no address available, was arrested at 6:15 p.m. May 29 in the 1200 block of Maple on suspicion of domestic battery and criminal trespass. Mark Alan Cruse II, 27, Hays, was arrested at 2:39 a.m. June 1 in the 700 block of Elm on suspicion of drug possession and possession of drug paraphernalia. Patricia Ann Nicolaides, 29, Plainville, was arrested at 4:04 p.m. May 31 in the 4300 block of Vine on suspicion of theft. Tyler Anton Legleiter, 28, Munjor, was arrested at 1:52 a.m. May 30 in the 400 block of Oak on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Joseph Eugene Bauman, 19, Hays, was arrested at 3:50 p.m. May 30 in the 1100 block of East Eighth on suspicion of transporting an open container of alcohol.

Michael Ryan Kellerman, 29, Hays, was arrested at 10:02 a.m. May 31 in the 100 block of West Fourth on suspicion of criminal damage to property and disorderly conduct.

Habitat for Humanity of Ellis County ReStore

Habitat for HumanityHabitat for Humanity of Ellis County has a ReStore in Hays!

The ReStore is located at the south end of The Mall with an outside entrance.  Hours are 9 am to 2 pm on Saturdays.  Donations of building materials, furniture and appliances are accepted during business hours.

ReStore Pick ups and Deliveries:
Deliveries will be made on exceptional situations only and will incur a minimum delivery fee of $10.
Pickups will be made, but donated items must be at ground level or in the garage.
Tigers in Action have agreed to help also.  If you need something picked up please call them at 785 628-5537.  They will need to be notified in advance.
Please remember that we do not accept clothing, bedding, mattresses, TV’s, computers and computer equipment.
All donated items must be clean and in good working condition.

A Habitat ReStore is a facility that supports the services provided by its local Habitat for Humanity affiliate.  The income generated goes specifically toward expanding the building program of the local Habitat affiliate.

ReStores recycle overstocked, discontinued, new and used building materials as well as furniture and appliances donated by manufacturers, stores, contractors and individuals.  These donated items are sold to the public or used in construction of Habitat houses.  All revenue from sales goes to the local affiliate in support of its building program.

The Mall is donating the space for the ReStore to HFHEC with the understanding that if a commercial venture wishes to use the location, HFHEC will have to vacate the space.  HFHEC pays all the utilities.

Those who work at the ReStore are volunteers donating their time.

Michael F. Schwarzenberger

Michael F. Schwarzenberger, age 96, of Denver (formerly of Collyer), passed away Wednesday, June 4, 2014 at Swedish Medical Center, in Englewood, Colorado.  He was born December 23, 1917, in Collyer, the son of Michael and Lugartha (Uhrich) Schwarzenberger.

On August 22, 1939, Mike was united in marriage to Ida Marie Heier in Park.  Mike was spent most of his working life as a farmer and a mechanic.  He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, holding the fourth degree.  He is survived by four sons, Don and wife Mary of Sahuarita, AZ, John and wife Cindy of Centennial, CO, Richard of San Francisco, CA, and Martin and wife Leslie Champlin of Overland Park; four daughters Sister Francine Schwarzenberger of Denver, CO, Sister Rita Schwarzenberger of Kaduna, Nigeria, Mary and husband Mike Segawa of Olympia, WA, and Serena and husband Mike Billmayer of Arvada, CO; seven grandchildren; and a brother Joe of Olathe.  He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Ida; brother Michael; sisters Mary, Pauline, Sr. Michael O.P., and Magdalen.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, June 10, 2014 at St. Michael Catholic Church of Collyer.  Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be Monday, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home in Quinter.  There will be a parish vigil service immediately following at 7:00 p.m. also at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions are suggested to Hope for the Village Child.  Checks made out to the organization may be sent in care of Schmitt Funeral Home, 901 South Main, Quinter, KS  67752.

Charles Guercio

Charles Guercio, 90, died Thursday, June 5, 2014 at Hays Medical Center.

He was born April 20, 1924 in Blasedale, New York, the son of Samuel and Theresa (Catalano) Guercio. He served in the United States Navy in WWII on the USS Lake Champlain. After the war he graduated from photography school in Dallas, Texas.

He moved to Hays, Kansas, where he worked as a photographer and soon opened his own photography studio. He married Peg Green in June of 1949. She preceded him in death in December of 1995. They operated Guercio Studios in Hays for many years preserving weddings and family ties along with other subjects through his work over the years.

He married Rose (Pfeifer-Windholz) Guercio on August 14, 1999. He moved to Victoria where they enjoyed retirement and family.  Together they traveled Kansas and took extended trips to visit relatives.  They shared a love for taking beautiful pictures of the old farmsteads, birds and churches.

Survivors include his wife, Rose, Victoria; a brother, Jake Guercio, Hutchinson, and one sister, Sandy Guercio, Buffalo, NY.; one stepson, Carl Windholz and wife, Valorie, Wichita; two step daughters, Jane Windholz, Wichita and Rhoda Urban and husband, Jerry, Victoria; six step grandchildren, Candy Miller and husband, Chris, Kansas City, Heather Smith, Wichita, Tammy Batt and husband, Tim, Russell, Heather Arasmith and husband, Chad, McCook, NE, James Wittman and wife, Jennifer, Hays, Jeremy Urban, Dallas,TX; and 12 step great grandchildren, Alex Richardson and Kyla Smith, Raven, Kyra, Kael,and Sawyer Arasmith, Skylar Wittman, Taryn and Tayler Batt, Chase, Lane and Jersey Wittman.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Peg, and four brothers, Joseph, Salvator, Vincent, and Anthony Guercio.

Funeral services will be at 2:00 pm on Tuesday, June 10, 2014 at The Basilica of St. Fidelis in Victoria, Kansas. Burial will be in the St. Fidelis Cemetery. Visitation will be on Monday from 6:00 until 9:00 pm and on Tuesday from 1:00 pm until service time, all at The Basilica of St. Fidelis. A Daughters of Isabella rosary will be at 6:30 pm followed by a parish vigil service at 7:00, both on Monday at The Basilica.

Duane Owen Newcomer

Lifelong WaKeeney area resident Duane Owen Newcomer passed away Friday, June 6, 2014, at Trego County-Lemke Memorial Hospital, Long Term Care.  He was 82 years of age.  He was born on January 5, 1932, on the family farm east of WaKeeney to Dean S. and Mabel A. (Link) Newcomer.

Duane was a graduate of Trego Community High School with the class of 1949.  On September 25, 1950, Duane was united in marriage to Elaine Denning.  To this union, seven children were born.  They enjoyed 51 years of marriage, until Elaine’s death on November 3, 2001.  On July 19, 2003, Duane married Ann Lindsay Clark Tomanek.  She survives of the home.  Duane was a farmer and rancher for his entire working life.  He was a member of the Christ the King Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus Council #4113.  He was also a charter member and past president of the Fraternal Order of Eagles #3374 in WaKeeney.  Duane was known to have the talent and ability to create or fix most anything.  In addition to being an outstanding steward of the land and successful farmer/rancher, he was a woodworker and carpenter, a mechanic, and an inventor with a very creative mind.  He made fine furniture for family members and loved making toys for his grandchildren.  He cherished time spent with family, especially his grandchildren. Duane had a wonderful sense of humor.

Survivors include his wife, Ann; six sons, David and wife Kathy of Greeley, CO, Randy and wife Julie of Louisburg, Keevin and wife Mary Lou of Ogallah, Brian and wife Jeris of Wildwood, MO, Steve and wife Brenda of WaKeeney, and Eric and wife Dolores of San Antonio, TX; one daughter, Sandra and husband David French of Salina; one step-son, Kevin Clark and wife Kathy of Inman; four step-daughters, Karen and husband, Ernie Littlechild of WaKeeney, Toni and husband Marvin Ayers of McPherson, Verla and husband Wayne Duryea of Overland Park, and Kerri and husband Mike Kosman of Ft. Morgan, CO; twenty-five grandchildren, Brice Newcomer, Greg Newcomer, Doug Newcomer, Jeff Newcomer, Debbie Newcomer, Kellie Bledsoe, Annie McMahill, Scott Newcomer, Craig Newcomer, Emily Roehrick, Leanna Keller, Cory French, Lance French, Gary French, Melanie Morrison, Brett Newcomer, Jordan Newcomer, Haleigh Newcomer, Tayler Newcomer, Mitch Newcomer, Whitney Newcomer, Lexsie Newcomer, Jennifer Ramos, Aris Franco, and Jonathan Franco; twelve step-grandchildren, Nichole Mattheyer, Kristin Fleser, Dylan Clark, Bethany Littlechild, Stacy Littlechild, Christopher Ayers, Amy Ayers, Tracy Duryea, Daniel Duryea, Alex Iungerich, Jamie Kosman, and Austin Kosman; twenty-one great-grandchildren; ten step-great-grandchildren; one step-great-great-grandson; one brother, Dale and wife Roberta of WaKeeney, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.  He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife Elaine; an infant great-granddaughter, Caitlynn Lea Morrison; and a brother Raymond.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m., Monday, June 9, 2014 at Christ the King Catholic Church. Burial will be in the Christ the King Cemetery.

Visitation will be Sunday, June 8, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., followed by a parish vigil service and Knights of Columbus rosary at 7:00.  All will take place at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions are suggested to Hospice Services, Inc., Trego County Lemke Memorial Hospital LTC, or Christ the King Catholic Church Masses.  Checks made to any of these organizations may be sent in care of Schmitt Funeral Home, 336 North 12th, WaKeeney, KS  67672.

Ermoian serving internship at First Call for Help in Hutch

GOSHEN, Ind. — Taylor Ermoian, a social work major from Hays, is serving at First Call for Help in Hutchinson as part of Goshen College’s summer-long Service Inquiry Program.

First Call for Help is a United Way organization that acts as a coordination center for necessary services and resources such as hygiene programs, medical assistance and educational initiatives. Ermoian is the son of Cheryl and Kyle Ermoian and attends Whitestone Mennonite Church.

Goshen College’s Service Inquiry Program gives students the opportunity to spend three months in a service agency with the goal of exploring the intersection of faith and vocation, while also developing skills for leadership. These goals are achieved through active participation, observation of others, intentional reflection and the tutelage of an on-site supervising mentor.

Goshen College is a nationally recognized liberal arts college in Northern Indiana known for leadership in intercultural and international education, sustainability and social justice. The college offers bachelor’s degrees in more than 65 areas of study, as well as select master’s degrees. Goshen enrolls approximately 900 students from 33 states and 38 countries, and is recognized for its innovative, life-changing study abroad program (Study-Service Term) and exceptional educational value. Rooted in the historically peaceful Mennonite church, the college’s Christ-centered mission produces passionate learners, compassionate peacemakers, global citizens and servant leaders.
