Brei will earn master’s from University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee

MILWAUKEE —Natalie Gail Brei, Hays, among the more than 3,500 prospective candidates for degree attending University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee commencement exercises Sunday in Milwaukee.

She will be awarded her master’s degree in science at the ceremony.

UWM is the second largest university in the State of Wisconsin, with nearly 28,000 undergraduate and graduate students.

The Fort Hays State University Foundation will honor two longtime employees at a retirement reception from 3 to 4:30 p.m. Thursday.

Brad Botz, senior director of gift planning, and Cathy Van Doren, development associate, each will retire from the foundation.

The come-and-go reception will be in the Robbins Center lobby and is open to all of FHSU and the Hays community. Drinks and light refreshments will be served.

Caroline (Schaus) Schumm of Ellis died at age 97, Wednesday, May 14, 2014 after spending her final Mother’s Day and week of life enjoying being pampered at Trego County-Lemke Memorial Hospital & Long-Term Care Center. Her birthplace was rural Ellis County on January 23, 1917, to John (Ast) and Wilhemina (Wentling) Schaus.

She is preceded in death by her parents and siblings Edgar, Edna Ptaschek, Frieda Bollig, Lena Bollig, William, Edith Hughes Malone and Raymond, as well as one grandson, Clay Kutina. Her survivors include husband, Martin, who she married February 4, 1938 in Tulsa, Oklahoma; one sister, Henriettta (Chris) Hansen of Clackamas, Oregon; and two daughters: Beverly McLaury of Ellis and Aleta (Lea) McCloud of Wichita, Kansas.

From those daughters, seven grandchildren survive–six in Kansas: Kirk Kutina, Topeka; Cindi Renyer, Valley Falls; Todd McLaury, Topeka; Monica Fisher, Overland Park; Darrin McCloud, Clearwater, and Andrea McCloud Johnson, Wichita. Her oldest granddaughter, Laurie Bishop, lives in Gordonville, Texas Of the 19 great grandchildren, 18 reside around Kansas and one is becoming a Marine in California. There are currently 12 great-great grandchildren.

With an 8th grade education, Caroline worked for more than 20 years in the Ellis Public School District’s School Lunch program progressing to the position of Manager; of her many accomplishments she was most proud to have helped design the kitchen for the current Ellis High School and planned many special banquets for FFA and proms. Many EHS graduates remember the hot lunches she and her team served with generous portions and smiles.

She and Martin have been members of Christ Lutheran Church since 1946. During her homemaking years she served in volunteer leadership at both school and church. In later years she spearheaded the “Sewing Ladies” who transformed old clothes and donated fabric into warm quilts that were sent to Lutheran World Missions and disasters.

Funeral services will be 10:30 AM Monday, May 19, 2014 at Christ Lutheran Church in Ellis.

Visitation will be Sunday 5 PM – 8 PM at Keithley Funeral Chapel 400 E. 17th Ellis, KS 67637.

Gifts in Caroline’s memory can be designated to Trego County Lemke Memorial Endowment Foundation of WaKeeney or Christ Lutheran Church in Ellis.

WALKER — Louise Virginia Sheets, age 64, died Wednesday, May 14, 2014, at Hays Medical Center, Hays, Kansas.

She was born December 3, 1949, in Cherry Hill, Maryland, to George Nelson and Dorothy Virginia (Strawbridge) Norris.  She and her companion, Richard J. Webb III have been together for over 20 years.

She was a homemaker and moved to Walker, Kansas, in 1995 from Cherry Hill, Maryland, where she grew up.  She was a very good cook and enjoyed canning, gardening, her flowers, her cats and spending time with her family and friends.

Survivors include her companion, Richard J. Webb III, of the home; a nephew, Adam Norris and  wife, Angie, York, Penn; two brothers, Edward Norris and Donald Norris, both of Cherry Hill, MD; and several other nephews and nieces.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Graveside services are 11:00 A.M. Monday, May 19, 2014, at the Winterset Cemetery south of Gorham, Kansas.

A vigil service and rosary will be at 7:00 P.M. Sunday, at Cline’s Mortuary, 412 Main, Victoria, KS. 67671.
Visitation is from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. Sunday, and from 9:00 to 10:30 A.M. Monday, at Cline’s Mortuary, Victoria, KS.

Habitat for Humanity of Ellis County ReStore

Habitat for HumanityHabitat for Humanity of Ellis County has a ReStore in Hays!

The ReStore is located at the south end of The Mall with an outside entrance.  Hours are 9 am to 2 pm on Saturdays.  Donations of building materials, furniture and appliances are accepted during business hours.

ReStore Pick ups and Deliveries:
Deliveries will be made on exceptional situations only and will incur a minimum delivery fee of $10.
Pickups will be made, but donated items must be at ground level or in the garage.
Tigers in Action have agreed to help also.  If you need something picked up please call them at 785 628-5537.  They will need to be notified in advance.
Please remember that we do not accept clothing, bedding, mattresses, TV’s, computers and computer equipment.
All donated items must be clean and in good working condition.

A Habitat ReStore is a facility that supports the services provided by its local Habitat for Humanity affiliate.  The income generated goes specifically toward expanding the building program of the local Habitat affiliate.

ReStores recycle overstocked, discontinued, new and used building materials as well as furniture and appliances donated by manufacturers, stores, contractors and individuals.  These donated items are sold to the public or used in construction of Habitat houses.  All revenue from sales goes to the local affiliate in support of its building program.

The Mall is donating the space for the ReStore to HFHEC with the understanding that if a commercial venture wishes to use the location, HFHEC will have to vacate the space.  HFHEC pays all the utilities.

Those who work at the ReStore are volunteers donating their time.

Bannister graduates from Southwestern University

GEORGETOWN, Texas — Anne Bannister of Hays was among 295 students receiving degrees this spring from Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas.

Bannister graduated Magna Cum Laude with a degree in art.

Salome ‘Sally’ Molleker

Sally Molleker, 95, Hays, died Thursday, May 15, 2014 at the Via Christi Villages in Hays.

She was born April 12, 1919 in Catherine, Kansas the daughter of Frank and Catherine (Schukman) Ubert.  On June 30, 1941 she married Leo Molleker in Hyacinth, Kansas. He died May 12, 1944.  She was a housekeeper and a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and the VFW Auxiliary.  Sally loved to visit with family and friends.

Survivors include two brothers, Wilfred Ubert of Arvada, Colo., and Victor Ubert of Kansas City, KS, one sisters, Lillian Staab of Hays, and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, brothers, William, Alfonse, Robert, Walter, and Francis Ubert, Jr., and sisters, Ida Goetz, Hilda Jaques, and Eleanor Ross.

Funeral services will be at 2:00 pm on Monday, May 19, 2014 at St. John’s Chapel at Via Christi Villages, 2225 Canterbury Drive.  Burial will be in the St. Joseph Cemetery.  Friends may call on Sunday from 5:00 until 7:00 pm at the Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 1906 Pine, or on Monday from 1:00 pm until service time at St. John’s Chapel at Via Christi Villages. A parish vigil service will be at 6:00 pm on Sunday at the funeral home.

Kansas Farm Bureau awards scholarships

MANHATTAN – Each year, the Kansas Farm Bureau Foundation for Agriculture awards scholarships to college students studying in fields that benefit agriculture and rural Kansas. Thirty-five recipients have received $21,000 in scholarships for the 2014-15 school year.

Over the past decade, the foundation has awarded more than $200,000 in scholarships.

“Developing leaders for tomorrow requires an investment in today’s youth,” says KFB Foundations Director Harry Watts.

The foundation awards four permanent, privately endowed scholarships: the DeWitt Ahlerich Memorial Scholarship, the Godfrey and Emma Bahr-Miller Scholarship, the Lester Crandall Memorial Scholarship and the Frank and Helen Bernasek Memorial Scholarship.

Seven scholarships were awarded to juniors and seniors enrolled in Kansas State University’s college of agriculture and majoring in a subject related to agriculture. Three KFB scholarships were awarded to juniors and seniors enrolled at Fort Hays State University.

Twenty-four Collegiate Farm Bureau members received scholarships for students attending a Kansas college with a Kansas Farm Bureau Collegiate chapter. One student received a scholarship to a technical college.

Sr. Patricia ‘Pat” Younger CSA, died May 7, 2014, at St. Francis Home, Fond du Lac, Wisconsin.

Sr. Pat was born to Jacob P. and Catherine (Mader) Younger June 2, 1930, at their farm home near Catharine, Kansas.

She attended Catharine Grade School and then left the farm for Fond du Lac, Wisconsin where she joined the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Agnes. Sr. Pat made her profession of vows on August 15, 1949.

She received a bachelor’s of education from Marian College in Fond du Lac and a master’s degree in administration with a minor in guidance and counseling from Mary Manse College in Toledo, Ohio.

She was an elementary teacher for eighteen years in Wisconsin, Indiana, Minnesota and Texas. She was a principal for twenty-seven years in Wisconsin, Indiana, Minnesota, New York, and Kansas. She was assistant principal at Hayden High School, Topeka from 1984-87; assistant superintendent for Diocese of Wichita schools in 1987-88; principal-president at Thomas More Prep-Marian High, Hays from 1988-92; and a teacher & librarian at Holy Savior School, Wichita from 1992-2001.

After retiring from teaching, sister spent 10 years in New York at the Leo House, a hotel ministered by the Sisters of St. Agnes, welcoming people to a home away from home.  Sister’s last mission was in Bisbee, Arizona, teaching religion to the Mexican children.

Sister Pat brought her gifts of music and laughter to every place in which she lived and ministered.

Survivors include two brothers, John C. Younger and wife, Ethel and Tom Younger and wife, Det, both of Victoria, KS; one sister, Nadine Pedersen, Winter Springs FL; two sisters-in-law, Jeanette Younger, Victoria, KS; LaVerna Younger, Hays, KS; 15 nephews; 23 nieces and many great-nieces and great-nephews; and by the Sisters of St. Agnes with whom she lived, prayed, and ministered.

She was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers, Richard Younger, Albert Younger, Jack Younger and Bernie Younger; and four sisters, Lucille Miller, Rita Desch, Lietta Niernberger and Catherine Bitterman.

A Mass of Christian Burial for Sister Pat was held at 2:00 P.M. Saturday, May 10, 2014, in the St. Francis Home Chapel, Fond du Lac, Wisconsin.  Father Ken Smits, Capuchin, was the presider.

Her final Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 A.M. Saturday, May 24, 2014, at The Basilica of St. Fidelis, Victoria, Kansas.  Burial in St. Fidelis Cemetery, Victoria, Kansas.

A vigil service is at 7:00 P.M. Friday, at Cline’s Mortuary, 412 Main Street, Victoria, Kansas 67671.

Visitation is from 6:00 to 9:00 P.M. Friday and from 8:30 to 9:45 A.M. Saturday, at Cline’s Mortuary Victoria, Kansas.

Memorials are suggested to the Sisters of St. Agnes Development Office, 320 County Road K, Fond du Lac, Wisconsin 54937.

The Sisters of St. Agnes and the Younger family are grateful to the nurses and staff of Nazareth Court and Center/St. Francis Home and the staff of Hospice Hope for their care of Sr. Pat.

WINONA, Miss. — John Edmund McCabe, age 50, former Hays, Kansas, resident died Friday, May 16, 2014, at his home, on the family farm in Winona, Mississippi.

He was born November 13, 1963, in Sweetwater, Texas, to Edmund Lee and Martha Jean (Sandidge) McCabe.  He married Teresa (Dreiling) on June 1, 1996, in Hays, Kansas.

He worked for John Richard in Greenwood, Mississippi, as a network administrator and moved to Mississippi in 2013. He was a 1982 graduate of Hays High School and a 2003 graduate of Fort Hays State University with a Bachelor of Business Administration Degree.  He was a network administrator at Fort Hays State University for five years. He was a gunsmith and an avid outdoorsman.

Survivors include his wife, Teresa McCabe, of the home; one son, Nathan Dreiling and wife, Kasey, Hays, KS; two grandsons, Lee David Blundon and Connor James Dreiling; his parents, Ed and Martha (Sandidge) McCabe, Hays, KS; two sisters, Martha Lee McCabe, Wichita, KS; Amy Louise Stump and husband, Frank, Denver, CO; one nephew, Matthew Dorzweiler, Hutchinson, KS; two nieces, Sara Masura and husband, Jon, Colorado Springs, CO; Lisa Dorzweiler, Denver.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Lester and Ella (Penn) McCabe; Henry Brown and Minnie Mae (Austin) Sandidge.

A memorial service will be at 10:00 A.M. Saturday, May 31, 2014, at the First Baptist Church, 12th and Fort, Hays, Kansas.  A private family inurnment will be at a later date.

The family will receive friends from 4:00 to 8:00 P.M. Friday, at Cline’s Mortuary of Hays, 1919 East 22nd Street, Hays, Kansas  67601 and from 9:00 to 10:00 A.M. Saturday, at the First Baptist Church, Hays, Kansas.

Robert Hayes

Hays, Kansas — Robert F. Hayes, age 73, died Saturday, May 24, 2014, at Hays Medical Center, Hays, Kansas.

He was born August 3, 1940, in Esbon, Kansas, to Fred W. Hayes and Mabel Estelle (Healy) Hayes-Rorabaugh. He married Carol (Loring) on December 16, 1961, in Hingham, Massachusetts.

He was a cattle hauler and freight hauler for over 25 years. He was a truck driver for KW Trucking and High Plains Trucking until 1998, then owned and operated the Russell county Fed-Ex freight routes until he retired in 2011. He was a 1959 graduate from Esbon High School and a U. S. Army Veteran. He was a cat breeder for many years and enjoyed showing his award winning maine coon cats in Kansas, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Texas and Colorado. He was an avid NASCAR and racing fan.

Survivors include his wife, Carol Hayes, of the home; two sons, David Wallace Hayes and wife, Laura, Hays, KS; Matthew Allen Hayes and companion Crystal Peter, of the home; one brother, Donald Hayes, Dodge City, KS; five grandchildren, Jonathan David Hayes, Austin Wade Hayes, Shelly Felt , Cheyenne C. Liester and Destiny R. Liester; and one great granddaughter, Alexis Felt.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Services are 2:00 P.M. Saturday, May 31, 2014, at Cline’s Mortuary of Hays 1919 East 22nd Street, Hays, Kansas 67601 and a U. S. Flag will be presented to the family by the Hays V.F.W. Post # 9076. A private family inurnment will be held at a later date.

David Martin Mai Jr.

David Martin Mai Jr., 84, of Russell, Kansas, died on Monday, May 19, 2014, at the Russell Regional Hospital.

David was born on March 20, 1930, in Hays, Kansas, the son of David Sr. and Christine (Kerbs) Mai. He grew up in Gorham, Kansas, and attended school at the Center School District #63.

He met, fell in love and was united in marriage to Emma Jean Gosser on August 08, 1949 in Hays, Kansas at the Trinity Lutheran Church.  From this union David and Jean were blessed with 4 children, 3 sons Michael, Randall and Mark and daughter Robin.

David worked as a heavy equipment operator for Bill Ingram and Red Rhyne for 10 years. In 1964, he started his own business and became owner and operator of Mai Excavating.  After a very successful career he retired in 1998.

He was a longtime member of St. John Lutheran Church in Russell.  When his children were young he was a Boy Scout master of Pack #134 and enjoyed taking the boys camping. He was also a member of the Russell Elks Club, Kansas State Square Dancing Board and Russell Square Dancing Club.  He enjoyed being a farmer and stockman, golfing, square dancing, computer games and his cats and birds.  Most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his many grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.

David is survived by his wife Emma Jean Mai of the home; sons Michael David Mai and wife Diana Lynn (Milberger-Wells) Mai, Randall Ward Mai and wife Diane Lee Cochran of Webb City, Missouri and Mark William Mai and companion Annette Stierlen of Russell; daughter Robin Faye Mai Logsdon Leiker and husband Daniel of Russell; sisters Ella Marie Mai Westmoreland of Denver, Colorado and Irene Ruth Mai Harzman and husband Fredrick “Uncle Bud” of Kingfisher, Oklahoma; David’s 14 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren and 4 great-great grandchildren; daughters Martine Chauveau and Mireille Roland both from France.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Bill and Ray Mai; sisters Ophelia Griffey, Elma Christine Steinert and Edna Olinda Joyner and grandsons Rex Wells and Jeremy Logsdon.

A memorial service to celebrate David’s life will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Friday, May 30, 2014, at the St. John Lutheran Church in Russell with Pastor Roger Dennis officiating.  Visitation will be from 9 A.M. to 8 P.M. on Thursday, May 29, 2014, at the mortuary with the family present to greet guests from 6 P.M. to 7 P.M. Thursday evening. Memorials may be given to St. John Lutheran Church or Russell Regional Hospital Therapy Center and sent in care of the mortuary.

Vernon Edward Morgenstern

Vernon Edward Morgenstern, 89, of Russell died Saturday morning, May 24, 2014, at Deseret Heath Care in Kensington, Kansas.

Vernon was born June 12, 1924, in Barton County, Kansas, the son of Edward and Minnie (Boxberger) Morgenstern. He grew up in the Galatia area and graduated from Russell High School in 1942.

He was drafted into the Army Air Corp and was honorably discharged in 1946.
Vernon was united in marriage to Mary Lou Keener on July 17, 1948. This union was blessed with two sons, Michael and Todd. They made their home in Russell.

Vernon had a long career in aviation and was a contract Pipeline Pilot for 53 years and flew for numerous oil and gas pipeline companies including Kaw and Jayhawk Pipeline.  In 2011 he was awarded the Wright Brothers Master Pilot Award from the Federal Aviation Administration.
Vernon was a member of Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association, Russell Elks Club, St. John’s Lutheran Church, Masonic Lodge, Consistory and Shrine, and the University of Kansas Williams Fund.  He enjoyed hunting, gardening and golf in his spare time.

Surviving family include his wife of 65 years, Mary Lou of Russell; two sons, Michael (Susan) of Lone Tree, Colorado and Todd (Kim) of Ellinwood, Kansas, three grandchildren, Jill Morgenstern, Hannah Morgenstern and Katie Morgenstern.

Cremation has been selected by the family and a private memorial service for Vernon will take place at a later date.  The register book will be available from 9 A.M. to 5 P.M. on Friday, May 30, 2014, at the mortuary.  Memorials may be given to the Russell County EMS or the Russell City Fire Department in care of the mortuary.

Delbert Lee Cochran, 92 of Waldo, Kansas died Monday, May 26, 2014 at the Hays Medical Center in Hays, Kansas.

Delbert was born April 9, 1922 in Waldo, the son of Commodore Perry and Bertha Alice (Crawford) Cochrun.

Delbert served his country in the U.S. Army during WWII.  He was a light Machine Gunner. He received the Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Clusters from injuries received in Italy. He also received the good Conduct Medal and European African Middle Eastern Service Medal. After coming home from the war, he resumed his occupation of farming and dairy. He measured all the production farmland that was effected by Lake Wilson.

Delbert was united in marriage to Barbara Lee Mansfield on December 3, 1943. This union was blessed with four children; James, Virginia, Jack and Diane.

Delbert was a member of the Otterbein United Methodist Church. He was a life member of the Russell V.F.W. Post #6240, a member of the Disabled American Veteran and served on the Waldo School Board. He enjoyed the outdoors, square dancing with Barbara, watching westerns and K.C. Chiefs and collecting flashlights.

Surviving family include two sons, James Lee Cochran (Sharon) of Russell, Kansas and Jack Leon Cochran (Jody) of Luray, Kansas; two daughters, Virginia Ann “Ginger” Langdon (Craig) of Lucas, Kansas and Diane Lee Mai (Randy) of Webb City, Missouri; grandchildren, Peter Cochran, Danny Cochran, Amy Kvasnicka, Jeremy Kvasnicka, Emily Bretz, Lori Versluys, Charity Schmidt, Candy Chadwick, Jed Cochran, Shane Mai, Pamela Carley, Scott Mai and Troy Mai; and 18 great grandchildren.

Delbert was preceded in death by his parents, beloved wife Barbara, sisters Virginia Thomas and Doris Trapp.

Celebration of Delbert’s Life will be held at 10:30 A.M. Saturday, May 31, 2014 at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell.  Burial will follow at the Luray City Cemetery where Russell V.F.W. Honor Guard will conduct Military Rites.  Visitation will be from 9 AM to 8 PM Friday, May, 30, 2014 at the mortuary.  A Memorial has been established to the First Responders of Waldo and Paradise.
