4-H Fashion Revue Results 2015

4-H’ers from across the county came out to show their favorite outfits at this year’s 4-H Fashion Revue. Youth from 5 – 18 years built their confidence in front of a group of interested parents and community members. Some outfits were made by the members, while others showed off their skills in looking for a good buy. 4-H events like this one allow 4-H’ers to build a variety of skills while having a great time.

Monte Joe Wilson, 47, Hays, was arrested at 11:40 a.m. July 4 in the 2500 block of Vine on suspicion of aggravated sexual battery and use of a communication facility to commit felony drug violation.

Brandy J. McGowan, 25, Cynthiana, Ken., was arrested at 7:11 a.m. July 4 in the 3400 block of Vine on suspicion of domestic battery.

Gage Andrew Reichert, 25, Hays, was arrested at 8:07 p.m. July 2 in the 1200 block of Tamarac on suspicion of drug possession and child endangerment.

John E. Curtin was born July 16, 1922 on a farm north of Colby, KS and died June 26, 2015 in Denver, CO. He was preceded in death by his parents, Everest & Jessie Curtin. He was also preceded in death by his siblings and their spouses including: Richard & Virginia Curtin and Erma & Marvin Cox of Atwood, KS, Jean & Raymond Mallory of Colby, KS, and Marie & Mori Katsuma and Merle & Robert Pearson of Denver, CO. John was also predeceased by his grandson Andy Jorgensen of Denver, CO.

John is survived by his children and spouses Scott & Heather Curtin of Chicago, IL & Park City, UT, Chris & Nancy Curtin, Leawood, KS & Paradise Valley, AZ, and Carole & Fred Jorgensen of Denver, CO. John is also survived by grandchildren, Christina Knight & Stephanie Weaver of Tulsa, OK, Nicholas Curtin of Jenks, OK, Caroline McGah of Chicago, IL and Grant Curtin, Kansas City. Great grand children include Jeffery & Timothy Knight and Collin & Lucas Weaver of Tulsa, OK and Nathan, William & Sabrina Curtin of Jenks, OK.

John grew up on a farm in Rawlins County, KS until WWII, when he served as a Sergeant in the Army. He was assigned to the Aleutian Islands and in Washington, DC. After serving in the Army John returned to Colby where he lived to his mid 80s when he moved to Denver, CO for the remainder of his life.

John graduated from Colby High School where he was on the wrestling team. During his working career he was a co-owner of Curtin-Upchurch Motors and Colby Distributing. John was also the Manager of the VFW Club in Colby and the Elks Lodge in Hoxie, KS.

John was an avid sportsman and passed on this passion to his family. Some of his best memories were fishing with them in the midwest, Canada and Alaska. John also enjoyed the annual pheasant season and was a regular on opening day for many years.

John was a voracious reader and loved about any kind of fiction. He also was an outstanding card player, be it poker or bridge, and enjoyed both games greatly. He was also a sports fan, following the Braves and Kansas State sports for many years. He attended a number of KSU bowl games with family and enjoyed those trips immensely.

John was best known to his family and friends as a man that liked people. Also a master story teller, which included a great deal of laughter and a certain measure of good scotch.

Services for John were held on July 1 at Greenwood Community Church, Greenwood, CO. There will also be a reception in Colby, KS on July 16th at 5:00 pm at the City Limits Grill for John’s friends and family to celebrate a life well lived. Dwane Leroy McClain, 79, of Russell, Kansas, died on Thursday, July 09, 2015, at the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, Kansas.

Dwane was born on May 21, 1936, in Waldo, Kansas, the son of James Leroy “Roy” and Edna (Cook) McClain. He grew up in the Waldo area and graduated from Waldo High School in 1954. He met, fell in love and was united in marriage to Beth (Winder) McClain on March 12, 1955, in Osborne, Kansas. From this union Dwane and Beth were blessed with 3 children, sons Gary and David and a daughter Mary. Beth preceded Dwane in death on October 26, 1993, in Russell, Kansas. Dwane was fortunate to find love a second time and was united in marriage to Cathy (McLain) Smith on October 12, 1999, in Eureka Springs, Arkansas. He worked for 36 years as a heavy equipment operator with the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT). He was a longtime member of Otterbein United Methodist Church. He was also a member of the Farm Bureau Board, Otterbein U.M.C. Trustee and a Good Sam R.V. Club member for over 20 years. He loved working his family farm near Waldo and enjoyed spending time outdoors. He also enjoyed woodworking, making crafts, going to craft shows, hunting deer and elk, watching Kansas State University and Wichita State University Basketball, watching P.B.R. Bull riding and attending children and grandchildren’s sporting events. Most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family.

He is survived by his wife Cathy of the home, sons Gary McClain and wife Diana of Overland Park, Kansas and David McClain and wife Lorraine of Abilene, Kansas and daughter Mary McClain of Hays, Kansas; stepsons Jesse Smith of Hays, Kansas and Billy Smith of Russell, Kansas; grandchildren Sarah, Sam(Jessica), Anne, Amy and Nathan McClain and Ravyn, Ayden and Daryus “DJ” Smith and John Legleiter.

He was also preceded in death by his parents and sister Norma Lee Matheson.

A celebration of Dwane’s life will be held at 11 A.M. on Monday, July 13, 2015, at the Otterbein United Methodist Church in Russell. Graveside services will be held at 2 P.M. on Monday, July 13, 2015, at the Grand Center Cemetery North of Waldo, Kansas. Visitation will be from 1 P.M. to 8 P.M. on Sunday, July 12, 2015, at the mortuary with family present to greet guests from 6 P.M. to 7 P.M. Sunday evening. Memorials may be given to the Good Samaritan Society in Hays, Kansas, and can be sent in care of the mortuary. Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell, Kansas, is in charge of the funeral service arrangements.

God is in the business of recruiting angels and he called Ernestine (Ernie) Jeanette Befort of Ellis, Kansas, home to her new position on Sunday, July 12, 2015. Ernestine was born on July 23, 1933, in Ellis, to Ernest and Agnes (Deutscher) Schoenthaler.

She was a graduate of Ellis High School and Brown Mackie School of Business. She married Robert L. (Bob) Befort on October 14, 1953. They began their married life in Hays and later moved to Ellis to raise their family. She enjoyed playing Texas Hold’em, Bingo and watching Wheel of Fortune at Ellis Country Club. She was employed at Ellis Good Samaritan Society for over 27 years, where she was honored as Employee of the Year in 2012. She was a member of St Mary’s Catholic Church, Ellis, and Eagles Lodge #3774 of WaKeeney.

Ernestine took great pride in her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren and their many accomplishments. She attended many of their sporting events, dance recitals, and other events as often as she was able. She was especially proud of her newest great-grandchildren, twins Sophia and Olivia Womack, and was eager to share her many pictures of them. She was an avid bowler in her early years and was also an Avon representative for many years.

Robert predeceased her in death on May 27, 2011. She was also preceded in death by her parents, brother, Wayne Schoenthaler, nephew, David Dinkel, and son-in-law, Randy Bertrand, on July 6, 2015.

Survivors include two sons, Dale (Mary) Befort of Victoria, and Dean (Tammy) Befort of Wichita; four daughters, Patti Bertrand of Minneapolis, Joyce (David) Brungardt of Rosemount, Minnesota, Rose Tway and her special friend, Troy Kuppetz, and Crystal (Mark) Armbrister, all of Ellis; 11 grandchildren, Amadee (Jayme) Staab, Brandon Befort and fiancé, Anna Robles, Brandy (David) Womack, Andrea (Nickolaus) Hernandez, Amanda (Ramon) Lopez, Cheryl (Jason) Jabara, Dustin Befort and his special friend, Krystle Vincent, Jennifer Harms, Joshua Tway, Logan Armbrister and Morgan Armbrister; 10 great-grandchildren, Brantlee, Kaymbree and Bexlee Staab, Sophia and Olivia Womack, Annicka, Alex and Xavier Hernandez, and Madelyn and Allison Jabara. She is also survived by her sister, Janice (LaVerne) Dinkel of Ellis and three nephews, Dan Dinkel of Littleton, Colorado, Don Dinkel of Columbia, South Carolina, and Daryl Dinkel of Rifle, Colorado.

Memorials are suggested to Ellis Good Samaritan Society.

Funeral services will be held at St Mary’s Catholic Church, Ellis, on Thursday, July 16, at 10:00 am; burial in Mt Hope Cemetery, Ellis. Visitation will be on Wednesday, July 15, at the church, where family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 pm; rosary at 7:45 pm; vigil at 8:00 pm.

Phillipsburg resident Sharon Rae Imm passed away Sunday, July 12, 2015 in the Phillips County Hospital in Phillipsburg at the age of 62.

She was born April 19, 1953 in Phillipsburg, the daughter of Arthur J. & Pauline (Gaddis) Imm.

She was preceded in death by her father and a twin sister, Karon Kae Imm.

Survivors include her mother, Pauline Imm of Phillipsburg; a close cousin, Larry Smith, also of Phillipsburg; as well as numerous other cousins, relatives and friends.

Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, July 16, 2015 in the Emmanuel Evangelical Lutheran Cemetery, Stuttgart, KS with Pastor Lee Bennight officiating.
Friends may sign the book from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, Phillipsburg. The casket will remain closed.
Memorial contributions may be made to Emmanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church or Hospice Services, Inc.

NW Kan. students earn distinction at Wichita State University

Wichita State Logo 2WICHITA – Wichita State University has announced the names of more than 2,400 students who were on the WSU dean’s honor roll for spring 2015.

To be included on the dean’s honor roll, a student must be enrolled full time (at least 12 credit hours) and earn at least a 3.5 grade point average on a 4.0 scale.

Hays, Kansas – Mary E. (Betty) Dechant, age 90, died Tuesday, July 14, 2015, at Hays Medical Center Hays, Kansas.

She was born April 18, 1925 in Catharine, Kansas, to William J. and Catherine (Schuler) Staab. She married Richard F. Dechant on January 22, 1946 at Hays, Kansas. He died March 26, 2007.

She was a homemaker, worked at St. Anthony’s Hospital and was a member of the Auxiliary and was known as one of the “noodle ladies”, a member of St. John’s Auxiliary and made bierocks for many years, and worked 15 years at Travenol Labs and retired in 1985 when the plant closed. She was a charter member of St. Nicholas of Myra Catholic Church and St. Nicholas of Myra Ladies Guild both of Hays. She has been a resident of the Good Samaritan Society of Hays for 18 months.

Survivors include two sons, Jerry Dechant and wife, Nanette, Gravois Mills, MO; David Dechant and wife, Rosie, Wichita, KS; two daughters, Janet Redding and husband, Mike, Enid, OK; Joyce Heffel and husband, Roger, Hays, KS; one sister, Agnes Lundy, Westland, MI; 12 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren and one due shortly.

She was preceded in death by her parents; eight brothers, Felix, Fidelis, Edgar, William, Richard, Joseph, Lawrence and Alfred Staab; one infant brother, Robert Staab; one sister, Alexia Younger.

Services are 10:00 A.M. Friday, July 17, 2015, at St. Nicholas of Myra Catholic Church, 2901 East 13th Street. Burial in St. Joseph Cemetery Hays, Kansas.

A St. Nicholas of Myra Ladies Guild rosary is at 6:30 P.M. Thursday, followed by a vigil service at 7:00 P.M. Thursday, both at Cline’s Mortuary of Hays, 1919 East 22nd Street, Hays, Kansas 67601.

Visitation is from 6:00 to 9:00 P.M. Thursday, and from 8:30 to 9:45 A.M. Friday, all at Cline’s Mortuary of Hays.

Eugene I. “Gene” Rohr, 85, Hays, died Monday, July 13, 2015 at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.

He was born in 1929 in rural Ness County, Kansas near Bazine, Kansas, the son of George P. and Mary (Paul) Rohr. He graduated from Schoenchen High School in 1947. He entered the U.S. Army during the Korean War in May of 1951 for basic training at Camp Chaffee, Arkansas.

On September 11, 1951, he came home to Munjor, Kansas and married Melasina M. “Millie” Jacobs from Pfeifer, Kansas. They were married for nearly 64 years. After marriage he was transferred to Fairbanks, Alaska for twenty months as a company clerk. He was discharged in April of 1953. He and Millie lived in Pfeifer, Kansas for nine years before moving to Hays.

In 1963. he entered the Life Insurance business for several major companies and retired after 40 years. He enjoyed camping, fishing, playing horseshoes and was an avid Kansas City Royals fan.

He was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, a life member of the American Legion Post #173, Hays, of which he was a past Vice Commander. He was a life member of the 3rd degree Knights of Columbus in Liebenthal and a life member of the Bishop Cunningham Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus in Hays. He served as past President and Secretary Treasurer of Northwest Kansas Life Underwriters.

Survivors include his wife, Hays, a sister Georgina Pfannenstiel of Lebanon, MO, nephews Floyd Klein of Victoria, Julian “JD” Dreiling of Lincoln, NE, Brent Rohr of Lees Summit, MO, Tom Pfannenstiel and Glenn Pfannenstiel of Mountain Home, AR, and Maurice Pfannenstiel of Lebanon, MO, nieces Kathy Younger of Lexington, NE, Paula Rohr Fry of Kansas City, MO, Pamela Rohr Sweeney of Manchester, MO, Susan Pfannenstiel of Mountain Home, AR, and Kathleen Boettler of St. Peters, MO, and numerous great and great great nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by four brothers, Al, Hubert, Edwin, and George Rohr, Jr.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 am on Saturday, July 18, 2015 at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church with Rev. Msgr. Barry Brinkman officiating. Burial with military honors by the Hays American Legion Post #173 honor guard and the Hays American Legion Riders Post #173 will be in the St. Joseph Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. until service time on Saturday at the church. Memorials are suggested to Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church or to masses, in care of the Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 1906 Pine.

Lillian Mae (Stieben) Moore, age 85, passed away at Cedar Village Long Term Care, Ness City, Kansas on Monday, July 13, 2015.

She was born on November 13, 1929 to Peter and Katie (Foos) Stieben in Bazine, Kansas.

On June 13, 1948, she was united in marriage to Delbert Moore in Bazine. He preceded her in death on December 24, 2013.

Lillian was a member of the Bazine United Methodist Church.

She is survived by two daughters, Janice (Roland) Winters, Kansas City, MO, Cathy Moore (Dale Lyman), Ness City; son, Douglas (Teresa) Moore, Bazine; son-in-law, Bruce Rolo, Tescott, KS; grandchildren, Michelle (Paul) Woydziak, Hoisington, KS, Stacy (Jeff) Grate, Benton, KS, and Willie (Meghan) Rolo, Hutchinson, KS; two step-grandchildren, Randy (Elizabeth) Maes, Windsor, CO, Bobbie (Craig) Weigel, Golden, CO; three great-grandchildren, Ryan Woydziak and Jonathan and Jaden Grate; six step-great-grandchildren, Joseph, Rebecca, Jacob and Caleb Maes and Cale and Ella Weigel; sister-in-law, Rachel Stieben; and nieces, Margaret (Dennis) Maier, Bazine, and Joyce (Harold) Hoss, Ness City.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Delbert; daughter, Joni Rolo; sister, Verna Stieben; brother Marvin Stieben; and son-in-law, Bill Winters.

Viewing will be Wednesday and Thursday, July 15 and 16 from 9:00 A.M. to 9:00 P.M. at Fitzgerald Funeral Home, Ness City.

Funeral services will be Friday, July 17, 10:00 A.M. at Fitzgerald Funeral Home.

Rischel “Rikki” Betts, 59, of Hays, Kansas, died on Wednesday, July 15, 2015, at the Trego County-Lemke Memorial Hospital in WaKeeney, Kansas.

A celebration of Rikki’s life will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Monday, July 20, 2015, at the Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary in Russell, Kansas.

Burial will follow at the Dorrance City Cemetery in Dorrance, Kansas. Visitation will be from 1 P.M. to 7 P.M. on Sunday, July 19, 2015, at the mortuary with family present to greet guests from 5:30 P.M. to 7 P.M. Sunday evening.

A Prayer Service will be held at 7 P.M. at the mortuary immediately following the family greeting Sunday night. Memorials may be given to the Norton Valley Hope Association and sent in care of the mortuary. Immediately following the graveside service the family will have a reception at the First Lutheran Church of Dorrance.

Gorham, Kansas – Alex D. Dreher, age 90, died Thursday, July 16, 2015, at the Russell Regional Hospital Russell, Kansas. He was born December 26,1924, near Hyacinth, Kansas, to Alexander and Rosa (Befort) Dreher. He married Anna B. (Graf) on November 19, 1945, in Hyacinth, Kansas. She died September 5, 2013.

After they married, they lived north of Hays before moving to the Bemis Ranch on the Saline River where Alex worked. That’s where he experienced his first plane ride checking cattle. They moved to Hays for a short time later before moving to Gorham where they resided from 1953 to 2014. Alex then moved to Vintage Place, an assisted living facility in Russell, to spend the remaining years of his life.

He worked for Julian Oil and Royalty when he began his career in the oil fields. This company became Jones-Shelburne-Farmer, and then John O. Farmer, Inc. Alex retired in 1987 after working 34 years for the Farmer family. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus both of Gorham.

After retirement, he began woodworking projects in his shop. He drew plans and built 25 Grandfather’s clocks, also roll-top desks, chairs, tables, headboards, bookcases and many other types of clocks. Alex is known for his unconditional love, which was reflected in his “Heart” clocks, being one of his favorite projects. He enjoyed spending time with his family, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Survivors include three sons, Dean Dreher and wife, Agnes, Amarillo, TX; Dale Dreher and wife, Carolyn, Wichita Falls, TX; Val Dreher and wife, Melissa, Russell, KS; three daughters, Diane Dinkel and husband, Ron, Victoria, KS; Laura Boxberger and husband Tim, Great Bend, KS; Wanda Hanzlicek, and husband Todd, Wilson KS; 21 grandchildren and 25 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; one son, Don Dreher; one daughter, Cindy Soukup; four great-grandchildren, Shelbie Alvis; Dakota, Hunter and Landon Marek; three brothers, Philip, Isadore and Joe Dreher; four sisters, Isabella Honas, Louise Krajewski, Marty Schmidtberger, and Berty Urban.

Services are at 10:00 a.m. Monday, July 20, 2015, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Gorham, Kansas. Burial in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Gorham, Kansas.

A Gorham Knights of Columbus rosary is at 6:30 p.m. Sunday, followed by a vigil service at 7:00 p.m. Sunday, both at Cline’s Mortuary, 412 Main Street, Victoria, Kansas 67601.

Visitation is from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. Sunday at Cline’s Mortuary in Victoria, and from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m. Monday at St. Mary’s Church, Gorham, Kansas.

Ricky C. Cox, age 69, passed away at his home on July 16, 2015. He was born on August 1, 1945 in Ransom the son of Leslie and Hanna Gross Cox.

He was a farmer and stockman and a member of the American Legion Olin Cole Post 392, Bazine, Kansas. He was a United States Army Veteran having served in Korea during the Vietnam War.

On May 4, 1968 he married Linda Wasinger in Ness City. She survives, of the home. Other survivors include: four sons, Darrin Cox, Ness City, Brandon and Travis Cox, Wichita, Jarrod Cox, Denver, Colorado; one daughter, Kayla Cox, Wichita; one brother, Merlyn Cox, Wichita; four grandchildren and one great grandson. He was preceded in death by a son, Justin Cox, and a granddaughter, Courie Cox.

Visitation will be at Fitzgerald Funeral Home on Friday, July 17, 2015 from 4:00 P.M. until 9:00 P.M. with the family present from 7-9 P.M. Funeral service will be on Saturday, July 18, 2015, 10:30 A.M. at Fitzgerald Funeral Home, Ness City. Burial will be in the Bazine Cemetery at 11:30 A.M., those who can not attend the funeral are invited to come to the cemetery for the committal service.
