Alta Marie Einsel 001

Alta Marie Einsel, 86, Greensburg, Kansas died Friday, August 1, 2014 at the Hays Good Samaritan Society.

She was born July 31, 1928 in Garden City, Kansas the daughter of Orville and Agnes (Smith) Gann. On June 1, 1954 she married Eugene Einsel in Garden City, Kansas. She was a school teacher and later a homemaker, teaching grade school and later middle school in the Greensburg, KS school district and the Lewis school district. She was active all of her lifetime in Eastern Star, PEO, Greensburg Methodist Church, VFW Auxiliary, and many other Greensburg community activities.

Survivors include her husband, of the home in Greensburg, one son Aaron Einsel and companion Rosa of Greensburg, one daughter Jayne Einsel Clarke and husband John of Hays, five grandchildren Luke Einsel and wife Katherine, Darin Einsel and wife Cierra, Kurt Einsel and wife Monica, Garth Einsel, and Paige Clarke, and one great granddaughter Ella Einsel.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother Wayne Gann.

Graveside services will be at 11:00 am on Monday, August 4, 2014 at the Fairview Cemetery in Greensburg, Kansas. Inurnment of her ashes will have already taken place. VICTORIA, Kansas — Leland H. Schumacher, age 86, died Saturday, August 2,  2014 at his home in Victoria, Kansas.

He was born April 13, 1928, on the family farm south of Victoria, Kansas, to Henry A. and Pauline (Dreiling) Schumacher.  He married Lillian (Dreiling) on November 5, 1962, in Victoria, Kansas.
He was a farmer, stockman and lived his lifetime in Victoria, Kansas. He was a member of The Basilica of St. Fidelis and a past parish council member.  He was a member of the St. Fidelis 3rd degree Knights of Columbus and the 4th degree Knights of Columbus Assembly.

Survivors include his wife, Lillian Schumacher, Via Christi Village, Hays, KS; two sisters, Jeanette Younger, Victoria, KS; Paula Schumacher-Palermo and husband, Carl, Kansas City, MO; one sister-in-law, Beryl Schumacher, Lubbock, TX;  several nephews and nieces.

He was preceded in death by his parents, six brothers, Clarence, Linus, Elmer, Melvin, Valery and Norman Schumacher; four sisters, Ruby Roth, Romilda Schumacher, Viola Schumacher and Irma Jean Dome.
Private family services are at 10:00 A.M. Thursday, August 7, 2014, at Via Christi Village/St. John’s Chapel, Hays, Kansas.  Inurnment at St. Fidelis Cemetery Victoria, Kansas.

A vigil service and Knights of Columbus rosary will be at 7:00 P.M. Wednesday, at Cline’s Mortuary of Hays, 1919 East 22nd Street, Hays, Kansas 67601.  The 4th degree Knights of Columbus Assembly will stand honor guard from 6:00 to 7:00 P.M. Wednesday at the mortuary.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. Wednesday, at Cline’s Mortuary of Hays.

Galazia Elizabeth “Gazy” Niehaus, 13, of Salina, entered the Kingdom of Heaven Friday, August 1, 2014.

Galazia was born in San Antonio, Texas, on February 26, 2001.

Survivors include her parents, Dean and Jennifer Niehaus; grandparents, Mary Mendez and Mark and Janet Niehaus; great-grand father, Chester Voss; close aunt, Angie Pelico; as well as her brothers, sisters and many extended family members.

At the family’s request, there will be no visitation.

Funeral Services will be at at Carlson-Geisendorf Funeral Home, at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, August 6th, with Pastor Jayson Pagan officiating.

Private family interment will be held at the South Star Cemetery near Hill City, Kansas.

Melvin L. Normandin

Melvin L. Normandin, 86, Hays, died Monday, August 4, 2014 at the Hays Medical Center.

He was born June 12, 1928 in Menlo, Kansas the son of Norman C. and Irene (Benoit) Normandin. He was a school bus driver for over 30 years, a farmer, Manager of Berland Oil and owned Normandin Liquor. 

He was a U.S. Army Veteran of the Korean War. 

On September 1, 1953 he married Joanna Burton in Damar, Kansas. He was a member of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, Hays, a former member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Damar, was a member of the Knights of Columbus Third Degree Council #2365 and the Bishop Cunningham Assembly Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus. He loved doing carpentry and woodworking.

Survivors include his wife, of the home, two sons Ken Normandin and wife Janet of Valley Center, Kansas and Joe Normandin and wife Nancy of Edmond, OK, two daughters Vali Leis and husband Dan of Hays, and Mary Belisle and husband Paul of Damar, six brothers Louis Normandin and wife Irene of Hays, Duane Normandin and wife Lavonne of Plainville, Eugene Normandin and wife Helen of Damar, Alfred Normandin of Poquoson, VA, Donald Normandin and wife Linda of Damar, and Richard Normandin and wife Mallone of Hays, three sisters, Jeannie Bellerive of Plainville, Mary Ann Meyers of Denver, and Della Huhmann of Tuscumbia, MO, twelve grandchildren, fifteen great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 am on Thursday, August 7, 2014 at the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Damar.  Burial with military honors will be in the church cemetery.  Visitation will begin at 6:00 pm on Wednesday at the St. Joseph Church in Damar, the parish vigil will be at 7:00 pm followed by a family rosary.  Visitation on Thursday will be from 9:00 am until 9:50 at the church.  Memorials are suggested to the Knights of Columbus or to masses.

Neita L. (Luhman) Hofstetter, 85, died August 2, 2014, at Rooks County Hospital, Plainville, Kansas.

She was born April 10, 1929, in rural Rooks County near Laton Kansas, to Fred and Lydia (Hachmeister) Luhman.

She married Edwin Hofstetter August 28, 1948 at Immanuel Lutheran Church North of Natoma, Kansas.

Neita was a lifelong resident of the Natoma area and member of Peace Lutheran Church. She was active in LWML, Natoma Heritage Seekers and Self Culture Club. She enjoyed interior decorating, baking pies and creating special occasion cakes.

She is survived by her husband of the home, two sons, Darrel Hofstetter and wife Nancy of Tonganoxie, Kansas and Roy Hofstetter and wife Diane of Leavenworth, Kansas; Seven grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren, Corbin Hofstetter and wife Barb, children, Aubrey, Claire and Wyatt of Shawnee, Kansas; Andrea Staples and husband Lee, children, Henry and Lydia of Leavenworth, Kansas; Rachel Lowman and husband Allen, children, Adison and Ava of Smithville, Missouri; Janelle Martinelli and husband Byron, children Avery and Jesse of Clovis, California; Chad Hofstetter of Gladstone, Missouri; Kristyn Hofstetter, children, Aniyah and Gabrial of Leavenworth, Kansas; and Joshua Hofstetter of Shawnee, Kansas; sister, Deloris Hofstetter and husband Paul of Hill City, Kansas; brother-in-law, Ernest Hofstetter of Plainville, Kansas; sister-in-laws, Frieda Pfortmiller of Natoma, Kansas and Lucille Luhman of Natoma, Kansas and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Neita was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Wayne Luhman.

Funeral services for Neita will be held at 10 A.M. on Thursday, August 07, 2014, at the Peace Lutheran Church of Natoma, Kansas, with Pastor Michael Schmidt officiating. Burial will follow at the North Lutheran Cemetery north of Natoma. Visitation will be from 9 A.M. to 5 P.M. on Wednesday, August 06, 2014, at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary in Natoma.

Family will greet guests the day of the service. Memorials may be given to The Lutheran Hour Ministries and sent in care of the mortuary. Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Natoma is in charge of the funeral service arrangements.

Marlene Edna (Karst) Becker–Steinle, 88 of Russell, Kansas died Sunday, August 3, 2014 at the Russell Regional Hospital.

Marlene was born January 5, 1926, in Galatia, Kansas, the daughter of Oscar and Amelia (Dumler) Karst. She grew up on the family farm north of Galatia and attended grade school at Sunflower Rural School. She then attended Great Bend High School and Russell High School, graduating from Russell in 1944.

Marlene was united in marriage to Marvin Becker on August 18, 1946, in Milberger, Kansas. This union was blessed with five children; Stephan, Anita, Michael, Laura and Paul. They made their home on the Becker Family Homestead for eight years before moving back to the Karst Family Farm, where she grew up. Then in 1973, they moved into Russell Marvin preceded her in death in 1983. Later she was united in marriage to Eugene Steinle. Eugene preceded her in 2001.

Marlene was a devoted wife and homemaker. Later on she worked at the Russell Regional Hospital as a CNA during the 70’s and 80’s. She loved sewing, reading, playing word games and trivia; and enjoyed cooking and baking. She was a member of United Emmanuel Lutheran Church of Milberger and ELCW woman’s group.

Surviving family include her five children; Stephan Becker (Terry) of Junction City, Kansas; Anita Ward (Phillip) of Paola, Kansas, Michael Becker and Laura Thomas (Dennis) all of Russell, Kansas and Paul Becker of Galatia, Kansas; 11 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren, three nephews and one niece. She was preceded in death by her parents, both husbands, sister Ulanda and two infant brothers.

A service of praise and remembrance will be held at 10:30 A.M. Saturday, August 9, 2014 at the United Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Milberger. Burial will follow at the Milberger Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9 AM to 8 PM Friday, August 8, 2014 at Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary, with the family present to greet friends from 6 PM to 7 PM. Services are pending for 10 A.M. on Monday, August 11, 2014, at the 1st Congregational Church in Russell with Pastor Ron Wedel officiating. Burial will follow at the Free Mission Cemetery in Denmark, Kansas. No viewing or visitation at the mortuary.

Family will greet guests at the church before and after the funeral.

The family has requested that memorials be given to the 1st Congregational Church and sent in care of the mortuary. Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell is in charge of the funeral service arrangements.

Logan resident Carol Ann Stanton passed away Tuesday, August 5, 2014, at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney, Neb., at the age of 76.

She was born June 16, 1938 in Logan, the daughter of Glenn and Bernice (Shelly) Fox.

She is survived by her husband, Darrell, of Logan; sons, Andy, of Hays and Darren, of Osborne; daughter, Leah Garman, of Burr Oak; 9 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Norman Fox, of Salina and Doyle Fox, of Eldorado; and a sister, Leah Prater, of Escondido, Calif.

Cremation was chosen. A memorial service will be held Monday, Aug. 11, at 10:00 a.m. in the Logan Christian Church, Logan, Kan., with Delbert Stanton officiating. Inurnment will follow in the Pleasant View Cemetery, Logan.

Friends may sign the book and visit with the family on Sunday, Aug. 10, from 2-5 p.m. at the American Legion in Logan.

Habitat for Humanity of Ellis County ReStore

Habitat for HumanityHabitat for Humanity of Ellis County has a ReStore in Hays!

The ReStore is located at the south end of The Mall with an outside entrance.  Hours are 9 am to noon on Saturdays.  Donations of building materials, furniture and appliances are accepted during business hours.

ReStore Pick ups and Deliveries:
Deliveries will be made on exceptional situations only and will incur a minimum delivery fee of $10.
Pickups will be made, but donated items must be at ground level or in the garage.
Tigers in Action have agreed to help also.  If you need something picked up please call them at 785 628-5537.  They will need to be notified in advance.
Please remember that we do not accept clothing, bedding, mattresses, TV’s, computers and computer equipment.
All donated items must be clean and in good working condition.

A Habitat ReStore is a facility that supports the services provided by its local Habitat for Humanity affiliate.  The income generated goes specifically toward expanding the building program of the local Habitat affiliate.

ReStores recycle overstocked, discontinued, new and used building materials as well as furniture and appliances donated by manufacturers, stores, contractors and individuals.  These donated items are sold to the public or used in construction of Habitat houses.  All revenue from sales goes to the local affiliate in support of its building program.

The Mall is donating the space for the ReStore to HFHEC with the understanding that if a commercial venture wishes to use the location, HFHEC will have to vacate the space.  HFHEC pays all the utilities.

Those who work at the ReStore are volunteers donating their time.

David K. Wann, 65, Hays, died Wednesday, August 6, 2014 at the Hays Medical Center.

David Wann oneHe was born January 25, 1949 in Hays the son of Maxwell and Marjorie (Cooper) Wann.  He was a U.S. Navy veteran and worked for Kansas Corporation Commission.  On August 15, 1992 he married Maryetta Yeager in Hays.  He was a member of Westview Church, was on their Praise and Worship Team, was a graduate of Hays High School Class of 1967, received both his BS and MS degrees in Art from Fort Hays State University, started and led the Acoustic Jam Sessions at the Hays Arts Council, and was a member of The Tempests, which were inducted into the Kansas Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Survivors include his wife, of the home, sons Jeremy Wann of Grand Island, NE, and Johnny James Fuller and wife Cappy of Hays, a daughter Jessica Wann of Hays, three brothers, C.M. Wann and wife Bonnie, Tom Wann and wife Susan, and Mark Wann and wife Janice, one sister, Marjorie Baker and husband Marc, and six grandchildren, Josalyn Huelsmann, Veranika Fuller, John Fuller, Anna Fuller, Joseph Fuller, and Bobby Fuller.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a son Jared Wann, and a brother Doug Wann.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 am on Monday, August 11, 2014 at the Westview Church, Hays.  Inurnment will be in the Mt. Peter Galen Stone, 62, of Oakley, died Thursday, August 07, 2014 at his home. He was born Sept 7, 1951 to Robert and Jessie (Staub) Stone in Dallas, TX. He married Elaine Weber on September 18, 1986. Pete attended the University of Texas at Austin for one year and then worked there in the glass blowing department. He also worked for Gryco Quartz before starting his own glass blowing business in 1987.

150x210-2899290Pete and Elaine moved back to Oakley, KS in 2004, where he opened his own glass blowing shop on Hwy 40. He was an avid fisherman, golfer and enjoyed being involved in the Tri County Cruisers and family.

He is preceded in death by his father, Robert Stone.

He is survived by his wife, Elaine, of the home; children, Heidi (William) Harris, of Dallas, TX, Shannon (Sandy) Moreland, of Port St. Lucie, FL, Luke Stone, of Venus, TX, Wendy (Stanley) Ariza, of New York, NY; his mother, Jessie Stone, Dallas, TX; sisters, Melanie Jack (Cash Olsen), of Las Cruces, NM, Penny (Steve) Wroski, of Albuquerque, NM and Priscilla Toon, of Dallas, TX; brother in laws, James (Sue) Weber, Oakley, KS, Mike (Deanne) Weber, Gordonville, TX, Eugene (Theresa) Weber, Hennessey, OK; sister in laws, Karen Weber, Colby, KS, Ilene (Roy) Nickel, Oakley, KS, Rose (Rick) Yeager, Greatbend, KS, Pauline (Gary) Unruh, Hays, KS and twelve grandchildren.

Myron Gerstner 001

Myron Francis Gerstner, age 63, Hays, passed away Friday, August 8, 2014 at Hays Medical Center after a long battle with cancer. He was born May 21, 1951 in Hays, Kansas to Alfred J. and Alice L. (Staab) Gerstner. He married Ida Marie Galle on August 26, 1972.

Myron served in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War from 1970 to 1974. He was an electronics specialist, a director of hospitality and operations for a chain of hotels and restaurants and a real estate agent. He also enjoyed renovating and managing rental properties throughout Hays. However, his favorite vocation was as a child care provider, enriching the lives of many through his dedication to caring for and respecting others. Myron was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and served as Quarter Master on the executive board of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9076.

Myron was proud to be raised and live on Pershing Court in Hays his entire life. He was devoted to his family as a son, a brother, a veteran, a husband, a father, an uncle, a grandfather and a friend.

Myron lived his life to love generously, care deeply, speak kindly and make others feel special. He wanted to ensure people understood the need to be kinder than necessary, for everyone is fighting some kind of battle and you never know when you could be in their shoes. He will be greatly missed by family and friends.

He was proceeded in death by his father, Alfred.

Myron is survived by his mother, Alice, Hays; wife, Ida, of the home; son Brian and wife Janella Mildrexler, Loveland, Colorado; daughter Christy Dreiling and Tim Heinlein, Prairie Village; son Lance and wife Brina, Hays; grandchildren Elizabeth and Jacksen; a brother, Wayne and wife Sandie, Hays; nephew James and wife Renee, Leawood and niece Whitney, Hays.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday, August 10, with a parish vigil at 7 p.m., and on Monday from 1:00 pm until 1:45, all at Hays Memorial Chapel, 1906 Pine Street. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday, August 11 at St. Joseph’s Church, 210 West 13th Street. Graveside services with military honors by the Hays VFW Post 9076 will immediately follow at St. Joseph’s Cemetery.

Memorials are suggested to the Myron Gerstner Memorial Fund benefiting veterans and those battling cancer in care of Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home.

Laurina (Rohleder) Kuhn, age 92, died Friday, August 8, 2014, at Via Christi Village Hays, Kansas.

She was born May 7, 1922, in Emmeram, Kansas to Peter N. and Clara (Toepfer) Rohleder. She married Clarence Kuhn on September 15, 1941 at Emmeram, Kansas. He died February 16, 1987.

She was a homemaker, farmer, and a cook for many years. She was a member of the Basilica of St. Fidelis, Christian Mothers, Daughter of Isabella, the Third Age Commission and lifetime member of the V.F.W. Auxiliary Post # 1751 and past president, all of Victoria, Kansas. She was a member of the St. John’s Nursing Home Auxiliary, and the Northwest Kansas Associating of the Visually Impaired. She moved off the farm at Emmeram, Kansas in 1993, into Victoria, Kansas.

Survivors include one son, Richard Kuhn and wife, Judy, Hays, KS; three daughters, Elizabeth Marcotte, Hyattsville, MD; Margaret Mader and husband, Art, Brighton, CO; Barbara Kuhn and husband, Tommy Parks, Chicago, IL; one daughter-in-law, Mary Ann Kuhn, Lees Summit, MO; one brother Frank Rohleder, Hays, KS; one sister, Mary Strunk, Clearwater, KS; 11 grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; one son, Clarence J. Kuhn; one son-in-law, Jack Marcotte; four brothers, George, Otto, Alfred, and Herb Rohleder; one sister, Helen Symmonds.

Services are 10:00 A.M. Thursday, August 14, 2014, at The Basilica of St. Fidelis Victoria, Kansas. Burial in Sacred Heart Cemetery Emmeram, Kansas.

A vigil service is at 7:00 P.M. Wednesday, a Daughters of Isabella/Christian Mothers/ V.F.W. Auxiliary rosary and memorial service is at 7:30 P.M. Wednesday, all at Cline’s Mortuary of Hays, 1919 East 22nd Street, Hays, Kansas 67601.

Visitation is from 6:00 to 9:00 P.M. Wednesday and from 8:30 to 9:30 A.M. Thursday all at Cline’s Mortuary of Hays. Memorials to The Basilica of St. Fidelis or Sacred Heart Cemetery Fund.

Phillipsburg resident, Darlene J. Rumbaugh, passed away Friday, Aug 8, 2014 at the Hays Medical Center in Hays, KS at the age of 89.  She was born July 2, 1925 in Western, NE, the daughter of Lowell & Marie (Gumble) Overman.

Survivors include her son, Everett (Bob) Hindman of Osborne; her daughter, Donna Sanchez of Phillipsburg; two stepsons, Barry Currence of Longmont, CO & Calen Currence of Elgin, IL; two sisters, Donna Newman of Lincoln, NE and Norma Johnson of Santa Barbara, CA; 10 Grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren & 2 great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Aug. 13 at 10:00 a.m. in the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel with Pastor LeRoy Herder officiating.  Burial will follow in the Fairview Cemetery.

Visitation will be Monday from 5:00 to 9:00 and Tuesday from 9:00 to 9:00 at the funeral home.

Memorials have been established to the Phillips County Genealogical Society.
