James Drew Epke, 25, Alexander, was arrested at 12:25 a.m. Oct. 5 in the 100 block of West 12th on suspicion of failure to appear.

Bryant Keith Davis, 22, Hays, was arrested at 9:45 a.m. Oct. 2 in the 100 block of West 12th on suspicion of theft.

Jacob Brandon Lyon, 31, Hays, was arrested at 3:16 a.m. Oct. 4 in the 1200 block of Vine on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Lauren Sannar Wood, 24, Hays, was arrested at 3:22 a.m. Oct. 4 in the 1200 block of Vine on suspicion of transporting an open container of alcohol.

Christopher Duane Gridley, 18, Hays, was arrested at 3:36 a.m. Oct. 4 in the 500 block of West 14th in suspicion of domestic battery.

Jonathen Allen Gridley, 20, Hays, was arrested at 3:36 a.m. Oct. 4 in the 500 block of West 14th on suspicion of domestic battery.

Derek William Bixenman, 20, Hays, was arrested at 12:09 a.m. Oct. 5 in the 300 block of East Sixth on suspicion of unlawfully hosting minors consuming alcohol and underage possession of alcohol.

Devan Charles Flegler, 19, Hays, was arrested at 12:09 a.m. Oct. 5 in the 300 block of East Sixth on suspicion of unlawfully hosting minors consuming alcohol and underage possession of alcohol.

Jordan Blaire Klabenes, 20, Hays, was arrested at 11:49 p.m. Oct. 4 in the 300 block of East Sixth on suspicion of underage purchase/consumption of alcohol.

Ty Dean Padgett Whittington, 18, Hays, was arrested at 12:09 a.m. Oct. 5 in the 300 block of East Sixth on suspicion of unlawfully hosting minors consuming alcohol and underage possession of alcohol.

Lucas Gregory Engel, 19, Garden City, was arrested at 1:05 a.m. Oct. 5 in the 300 block of West Eighth on suspicion of drug possession, possession of drug paraphernalia, underage purchase/consumption of alcohol, and underage possession of alcohol.

Patrick Lynn Harvey, 26, Hays, was arrested at 2:40 a.m. Oct. 5 in the 200 block of West Fifth on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

James Paul Deverman, 25, Hays, was arrested at 11:08 p.m. Oct. 4 in the 2500 block of Vine on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Rhonda Renee Flinn, 36, Hays, was arrested at 2:55 p.m. Oct. 3 in the 100 block of West 12th on suspicion of theft.

James David Gilliam, 34, Victoria, was arrested at 2:23 a.m. Oct. 4 in the 200 block of West Ninth on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs and refusal of breath/blood test.

Alex William Feldkamp, 23, Hays, was arrested at 11:35 p.m. Oct. 3 in the 300 block of Ash on suspicion of drug possession and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Caleb Isaac Seaton, 21, Hays, was arrested at 11:35 p.m. Oct. 3 in the 300 block of Ash on suspicion of drug possession and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Antonio Jose Starr, 24, Hays, was arrested at 11:35 p.m. Oct. 3 in the 300 block of Ash on suspicion of possession of stolen property.

Garrett Dwane Jones, 22, Hays, was arrested at 11:35 p.m. Oct. 3 in the 300 block of Ash on suspicion of drug possession and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Kohl Jeffrey Gridley, 23, Hays, was arrested at 2:11 a.m. Oct. 4 in the 300 block of Ash on suspicion of criminal damage to property and carrying a concealed weapon while intoxicated.

Xavier Michael Babudar, 20, Eagle Mountain, Utah, was arrested at 4:48 p.m. Oct. 3 in the 4300 block of Vine on suspicion of theft.

Ruby B. Barrows, 88, of Leawood, Kansas, passed away on October 7, 2014.

Ruby was born on March 29, 1926, the daughter of Ralph and Pearl Black, in rural Ellsworth County, Kansas.

As an infant, her parents and grandparents moved to Ness County, Kansas. She was a graduate of Ness City High School in 1944. In January 1944, Ruby eloped with Thomas M. Barrows. In 1947, her son, Richard, was born.

Fitzgerald Funeral Home of Ness City is in charge of arrangements.

Viola Mae Yost, age 99, passed away peacefully of natural causes on October 7, 2014, at Locust Grove Village in La Crosse, Kansas.

She was born Viola Mae Wimmer in Harlan, Kansas, on July 25, 1915, to Harvey Lester and Mary Ann Zion Wimmer.

Viola graduated from Portis High School, attended college at York College for two years, then finished her teaching education at Fort Hays State University. She enjoyed a long and successful teaching career to include Alexander (for 31 years), Nekoma, and Heizer.  Additionally she served as a substitute teacher for McCracken and Lacrosse. She served as a correspondent for the Rush County News for eleven years, played piano and organ for the Alexander United Methodist Church for over 62 years, accompanied competitive musical performances for music students  and was in high demand to perform at weddings and various social events. After moving to Hays later in life, Viola found renewed passion for teaching while volunteering as a Foster Grandmother at Holy Family Elementary. She also enjoyed socializing with her friends at her retirement apartment complex and the Hays United Methodist Church.  Family was always a priority for Viola as well as service in her church that included serving as a delegate for the United Methodist Annual Conference.

Viola married Harry Yost on June 12, 1938. He preceded her in death on August 2, 2000. She was also preceded in death by infant sister Marilyn Wimmer, brother De Wimmer, sister Sally Smith, and daughter Mary Kay McEvoy.

Viola is survived by sister Vernita Nickel of Riverside, CA, son Gary Yost and wife Joy, Bison, KS, son Paul Yost, San Antonio, TX,  daughter Dorothy Plum and husband Bill, Kansas City, MO, and son John Yost and wife Sara of Olathe, KS.  Also survived by grandchildren Brad Westerman, Brigette Ellis, Melinda Ellis, Rick Yost, Michelle Rieman, Mike Yost, Skyler Yost, Echo Sandburg, Summer Schwindt, Cale Yost, Mackenzie Yost and 24 great grandchildren with 2 great-great grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at Alexander Methodist Church located  at 103 E. Kepner Ave, Alexander, KS 67513 at 10:30am on Saturday, October 11, 2014. Lunch will be provided after the service in the church basement.

The family requests memorial contributions be given to the Locust Grove Village Golden Belt Community Foundation in lieu of flowers. You may donate directly by visiting the Locust Grove Village website at www.rcnh.org and clicking on the Golden Belt Community Foundation “donate” button or obtain the address to send a donation via US Mail.

Habitat for Humanity of Ellis County ReStore

Habitat for HumanityHabitat for Humanity of Ellis County has a ReStore in Hays!

The ReStore is located at the south end of The Mall with an outside entrance.  Hours are 9 am to 2 pm on Saturdays.  Donations of building materials, furniture and appliances are accepted during business hours.

ReStore Pick ups and Deliveries:
Deliveries will be made on exceptional situations only and will incur a minimum delivery fee of $10.
Pickups will be made, but donated items must be at ground level or in the garage.
Tigers in Action have agreed to help also.  If you need something picked up please call them at 785 628-5537.  They will need to be notified in advance.
Please remember that we do not accept clothing, bedding, mattresses, TV’s, computers and computer equipment.
All donated items must be clean and in good working condition.

A Habitat ReStore is a facility that supports the services provided by its local Habitat for Humanity affiliate.  The income generated goes specifically toward expanding the building program of the local Habitat affiliate.

ReStores recycle overstocked, discontinued, new and used building materials as well as furniture and appliances donated by manufacturers, stores, contractors and individuals.  These donated items are sold to the public or used in construction of Habitat houses.  All revenue from sales goes to the local affiliate in support of its building program.

The Mall is donating the space for the ReStore to HFHEC with the understanding that if a commercial venture wishes to use the location, HFHEC will have to vacate the space.  HFHEC pays all the utilities.

Those who work at the ReStore are volunteers donating their time.

Former Phillipsburg resident Ella P. Johnson passed away Sunday, Oct. 12, 2014 at the Redbud Village in Plainville, KS at the age of 98.

She was born March 11, 1916 in Phillips County to Ralph & Laura (Schulke) Johnson.  Ella was a retired elementary school teacher.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Wayne L. Johnson, and two granddaughters, Weslea Paige Lowry and Kelcee Nicole Lowry.

Survivors include her daughter, Kelly Lowry of Plainville; granddaughter, Paige Harding of Norton, KS; one great-granddaughter; and her brother, Merrill Johnson, of San Diego, CA.

Graveside services will be held Thursday, Oct. 16, at 2:00 p.m. in the Fairview Cemetery, Phillipsburg, with Pastor Joel Hiesterman officiating.

Visitation will be Wednesday, Oct. 15, from 9 a.m. – 9 p.m. at the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, Phillipsburg.

Memorial contributions may be given to the Fort Bissell Museum in Phillipsburg or to Andreson Memorial Park in Plainville.  Online condolences may be sent to www.olliffboeve.com.

Margaret Umberger, 83, of Oakley, died Sunday, October 12, 2014 at Gove County Medical Center.

She was born March 13, 1931, in Larned, KS to William and Katie (Schneider) Schraeder. She graduated from Larned High School. Margaret was united in marriage with Cody Umberger on September 6, 1950.

She worked at Larned State Hospital and was a farmer, with land spreading across Kansas from Rozel to Tribune. She enjoyed dancing and was a member of the Sunflower Polka Club and Polka of America Club.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Cody and brother, Virgil Schraeder.

She is survived by her son, Kenneth (Virginia) Umberger, Colby; significant other, Tom Heier, Oakley; grandchildren, Justin Umberger, Colby, Debra (J.W.) Matlock, Grainville, MO and Katherine (Jon) Mader, Elkins, AR; great grandchildren, Ian and Addie Matlock and Grace Mader and sister in law, Beth Schraeder.

Visitation will be 3-5:00 p.m. Sunday, October 19, 2014 at Baalmann Mortuary, Oakley. Funeral Service will be 10:00 a.m. Monday, October 20, 2014 at Baalmann Mortuary, Oakley. A graveside service will follow at 3:00 p.m. at Larned Cemetery, Larned, KS. Habitat for HumanityHabitat for Humanity of Ellis County Board Meetings are the 2nd Tuesday of each month at 7 pm at First United Methodist Church, 305 W. 7th Street, Hays. Park at the back of the church in the lot across the street from Taco Shop. Go in the back door and up the stairs. The meetings are in the parlor. All interested persons are welcome.

You may decide to serve on the HFHEC Board.

You may decide to serve on a HFHEC committee. Committees include: public relations/fund raising, finance, church relations, site selection, family selection, construction, and family support.

Susan Green

HAYS, Kan. – Susan Frances (Shrader) Green, age 64, died Wednesday, October 15, 2014, at KU Medical Center in Kansas City.

She was born January 19, 1950, in Anaheim, California, to Douglas Roy and Frances Hazel (Freeman) Shrader.

She was a legal secretary for many years. She attended high school in Vancouver, Washington and attended college in the Portland, Oregon and Vancouver area. She lived in Sacramento, California and Wichita before moving to Hays in 1995.

Survivors include her twin sons, Alex Green and Matthew Green, both of Hays, KS; son, Scott Green of Hays, KS; one daughter, Courtney Green, Hays, KS; her former husband, Keith Green, Hays, KS; two brothers, Mike Shrader and wife, Shirley, Austin TX; Steve Shrader and wife, Cheri, Anchorage, AK; four nieces, Tanya Fandrich and husband, Ken, Oregon City, Oregon; Tamara Blair and husband, Todd, Issaquah, WA; Erika Harvey and husband, Marc, Matthews, NC and Vicki Shrader-Brister and husband, Chuck, Austin, TX.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her twin brother, Patrick Shrader.

A memorial service will be held at 1:00 P.M. Saturday, October 18, 2014, at Cline’s Mortuary of Hays, 1919 East 22nd Street, Hays, Kansas 67601. The family will receive friends from 12:00 to 1:00 P.M. Saturday, at Cline’s Mortuary of Hays. A private family inurnment will be held at a later date.

Harding Guy Runnion

Long Island resident Harding Guy Runnion passed away Tues., Oct. 14, 2014, at his home in Long Island at the age of 94.

He was born in Phillips County, KS to Jay and Nellie (McFall) Runnion on August 21, 1920. Harding worked as an over-the-road truck driver.

He was preceded in death by his wives, Violet and Luella, and two sons, Jay and Ronald.

He is survived by three daughters, Winona “Jayne” Jarvis of Long Island, KS; Barbara Hotsko of Salinas, CA; and Karen Klein of Manhattan, KS; 14 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren, and 11 great-great-grandchildren.
Cremation was chosen. 

A memorial service will be held Monday, Oct. 20, at 2:00 p.m. in the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, Phillipsburg, with Pastor LeRoy Herder officiating. Inurnment will follow in the Fairview Cemetery, Phillipsburg, with military honors by the Roy C. Goodrich American Legion Post #304 of Long Island.

Friends may sign the book on Monday from 9 a.m. to service time at the funeral home.

Phillipsburg resident Judy Bennett passed away Oct. 15, 2014 at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney, NE at the age of 68.

She was born April 8, 1946 in Hays, KS, the daughter of Leonard & Regina (Dreiling) Braun. She owned and operated her own sewing and monogramming business, A Bennett Creation, in Phillipsburg.

Her husband, Warren, preceded her in death on March 8, 2014.

Survivors include her brothers, Donald Braun of Stockton, KS and LeRoy Braun of Phillipsburg, KS, and her sister, Barbara Zimmerman of Hays, KS.

Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday, Oct. 20, at 10:00 a.m. in the SS Philip & James Catholic Church, Phillipsburg, with Father George Chalbhagam officiating.  Burial will follow in the Fairview Cemetery, Phillipsburg.

Visitation will be Sat. and Sun. from noon – 9 p.m. at the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, Phillipsburg. A Vigil service will be held Sunday evening at 7:00 p.m. in the funeral home.

Aloysius J. Rohr, age 86, of Lincoln, Nebraska, passed away Wednesday, October 15, 2014 at his home in Lincoln.

He was born on August 19, 1928, in Liebenthal, Kansas, to Jacob L. and Francis (Herman) Rohr.
Aloysius spent most of his life in the WaKeeney area. On April 2, 1951, he was united in marriage to Wilma Jean Bell. They also spent time as a couple in Pratt and Hutchinson, until Wilma’s death on May 7, 2012. They enjoyed 61 years of marriage together. Aloysius then moved to Lincoln, Nebraska to be nearer to family.

He was a member of the Knights of Columbus. Aloysius was known for his talent as a woodworker. He loved to go on fishing trips with his grandchildren, and enjoyed any time he had with family. He could also occasionally be found watching car races on television, cheering on his favorite driver.

Aloysius will be dearly missed by many.

Survivors include one son, Jerry J. of Lake Ritchie, Florida; one daughter, Alice J. Sorensen of Lincoln, Nebraska; thirteen grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a brother Celestine of Denver, Colorado. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; and infant son, Steven A.; two sons Mark, G. and Allen W.; three brothers, Matt, Alvin, and Leonard; and two sisters, Irene Baalman and Francie Carlman.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, October 22, 2014 at Christ the King Catholic Church of WaKeeney with Father Charles Steier as celebrant. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be from 9:0 0 a.m. to noon, Wednesday at the funeral home.

IN LIEU OF FLOWERS, memorial contributions are suggested to the Aloysius Rohr Memorial Fund. Checks made to the fund may be sent in care of Schmitt Funeral Home, 336 North 12th, WaKeeney, KS 67672.

Phillipsburg resident Buster Winn passed away Thurs., Oct. 16, 2014, at his home in Phillipsburg at the age of 74.

He was born Feb. 13, 1940 in Laird, CO to Lloyd C. & Vera V. (Little) Winn. His wife, Anita, preceded him in death on March 2, 2010.

Survivors include his daughter, Natalie Flin of Everett, WA; stepdaughter, Gretchen Swift of Phoenix, AZ; stepsons, Bret Derr of Phillipsburg and Neil Derr of Castle Rock, CO; 7 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; sister, Sharon Baumgartner of Brighton, CO and brother, Leroy Winn of Brighton, CO.

Cremation was chosen.  A memorial service will be held Thursday, Oct. 23, at 10:30 a.m. in the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, Phillipsburg, with Pastor Joel Hiesterman officiating.

Friends may sign the book Wednesday from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. at the funeral home.

Bertha S. Fogle

Bertha S. Fogle, 87, Hays, died Sunday, October 19, 2014, at the Trego County-Lemke Memorial Hospital in WaKeeney, Kansas.

She was born October 30, 1926, in Hays the daughter of Frank and Martha (Ploutz) Fogle. She worked on the farm for much of her life, and enjoyed gardening, crocheting, and raising chickens, ducks, geese and guineas. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church.

She is survived by her sister, Martha Sessin of Hays and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be at 2:00 pm on Friday, October 24, 2014 at the Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 1906 Pine Street. Burial will be in the Mt. Allen Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1:00 pm until service time on Friday at the funeral home. 

Memorials are suggested to the Trinity Lutheran Church, in care of the funeral home. Condolences may be left for the family at www.haysmemorial.com.
